Traffic tally

In 2nd Class A, we have been learning about data. We decided to carry out a survey to find out the amount of traffic on the road outside our school. We recorded our results using a tally chart. On a cold and frosty morning, we had great fun counting all the vehicles that passed our gate. We discovered that cars were the most popular type of vehicle!

3D Shape Walk

The children learned all about cubes, cuboids, cylinders, cones, triangular prisms, spheres and pyramids in Maths. They were really good at spotting shapes around the classroom so we decided to take a walk around the grounds of the school. They found lots of shapes using their Maths eyes 👀 and were really surprised 😲 how many they spotted!! The blue shed, timber sheds, the oil tank, window boxes, the prefabs, chimneys, chimney pots, a basketball 🏀 and the railings outside some classrooms to name but a few!!!

Do they Roll, Slide or Stack?

In Maths, the children set out to find out if 3D shapes roll or slide. The children also experimented with stacking some of the shapes. They found that shapes that have flat faces stack easily é.g. Cube, cuboid, cylinder and shapes with curved faces slide and roll é.g. Cylinder, cones, spheres.

Our Teeth

We looked at the effect of sugar on our teeth. A boiled egg, to represent the enamel, was placed in a jar of Coke and left overnight. Next a toothbrush 🪥 was used to take the dark colour off the shell of the egg using a circular motion. The children were amazed at how dark the shell had become because of the sugar in the coke. They said that they will be more mindful of brushing their teeth after drinking sugary drinks 🥤.

Our Lungs

In Science, the children learned about keeping healthy how important it is to look after our lungs 🫁.

Before doing our exercises we took our pulse rate. We noted that the rate got much higher and our breathing 😮‍💨 was a lot faster.

Viking Projects

We learned all about Vikings and The Norse Gods in History during the month of November. The children presented their own individual projects based on various aspects of what they learned for example how they dressed, their weapons, longships, what their homes were like, how they came to settle in Ireland. They were so proud to stand up in front of the class and show their very impressive projects. 3rd class Superstars 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟👏👏

October in First Class

Witches Cauldrons
In art this month we have been experimenting with clay. We created clay hedgehogs at the beginning of the month and for the last two weeks we have been working on these cauldrons. Evil witches fell into them while making their spells.

S.E.S.E. – India
For Geography this month have been learning about the Country India. We found out lots of new things about this country and made Holiday Brochures so that other people can learn about it too. Take a look at some of them below. We particularly enjoyed learning about Diwali – the festival of light which is celebrated in India each year.

S.E.S.E. – Hedgehogs
For Science we were learning about Hedgehogs. We incorporated this into our English by writing reports on them and creating clay hedgehogs in Art.

Gaeilge – Oíche Shamhna
In Irish we have been learning about Halloween. Last week we drew ourselves dressed up in different costumes.
To say this in Irish we wrote: Tá mé gleasta mar ______.

P.E.
We are really improving our GAA skills in our lessons with Pat.

Cave Paintings

We learned about how the Stone Age people drew on cave walls. There are many examples of their drawings/paintings to be seen around the world. One example that really impressed us was handprints found in Argentina. We tried to replicate this artwork by having a go at creating our own handprints. As you can see from the smiles on our faces we had great fun 🤩👏👏
