As many of you will know by now, we have secured funding to convert the green area next to the school into an astro-turf surface. This will be a fantastic additional resource for the children of our school.
Additional Accommodation Update
Following grant approval for the additional classrooms, our quantity surveyor has completed the survey of the site. We have submitted the plans and costing to the Dept. Once approved we will seek planning permission.
Upcoming PA Fundraisers
There will be a bake sale in the Health Centre on Sunday the 8th of December after 11 o’clock mass.
The PA have also ordered packs of Christmas cards @ €5 per pack available to purchase. They have been designed for the children to colour and personalise themselves.
We are all looking forward to the upcoming Christmas performances on the 13th of December. 4th Class will be at 10:30 am Both Senior Infant Classes together at 12 pm 6th Class at 1:30 pm
All parents are welcome to attend
The turning on of the Christmas lights in Collooney will take place on December the 8th. The children from first and second class will sing carols starting at 6 pm.
Playground Go Fund Me
Following the recent damage to the playground in Collooney, there has been a Go Fund Me page set up to raise money to repair the damage. You can access this via Facebook.
The school will close for Christmas on December 20th at 12 pm and reopen on January the 6th.
4th September 2019 Welcome back to all our pupils as we start in to a new school year. An especially warm welcome to our 27 new Junior Infants & the pupils who have transferred from other schools. We hope they all settle in well & enjoy school life here in Scoil Mhuire agus Iosaf.
New school structure As you are aware, 1st & 2nd classes are now situated along with our Crann Darach class in the old Junior School which has been renamed School A. The old Senior School will now be known as School B.
Set-down Area We would like to thank everyone for their patience while the new set-down area was being constructed. Please still be mindful of children crossing the road as everyone is still getting used to the new system.
Aladdin School Administration System Can everyone please ensure they have received a text regarding the setup of the Aladdin app. All text notifications & end of year report cards issue via Aladdin. Any absence reasons can be recorded by parents on the app also. If you have been locked out of your account or have problems setting it up please let Stacey know ASAP.
Music Generation We are delighted to welcome Music Generation back to our school this year. All classes will avail of the music generation tutors. Junior Infants – 2nd and class will follow the Discovering Music programme for a period of 14 weeks. Crann Darach will avail of a specialised programme for 20 weeks. 3rd – 6th class will follow the Performing Music programme & learn an instrument for a period of 26 weeks. The start dates of each class are staggered to facilitate different tutors. A text will notify parents when your child’s class begins. All classes will avail of Music Gen for a small fee.
Book Fair Scholastic Book Fair will be delivered to school on Tuesday October 8th & will remain until Tuesday 15th October. Pupils will have a chance to view the books & if they wish to purchase any they can bring money in on a specified day. Parents of Junior & Senior Infants may view the books themselves. More details to follow.
School Calendar Please find attached the provisional school calendar for 2019/2020. This may be subject to change due to extreme weather conditions. I wish to draw your particular attention to the change to the February midterm break, closure on October 16th for staff training & closure Monday 16th March for long weekend. The closing date for summer holidays will now fall on Thursday 25th June 2020.
Healthy Eating Policy – School Lunches We have been lucky enough to received funding to provide free school lunches to all pupils wishing to avail. These are provided by Fresh Today. Changes to the lunches can be made by logging in to the link below and entering the login details provided before the summer, by email to [email protected] or by texting CHANGE along with your name & number to 087 1184394. Please note the school secretary cannot make changes to your child’s lunch.

Labels!!! Please label all uniform items, coats, bags & drinks bottles (especially for Junior & Senior Infants). Our little pupils are finding it hard to recognise their own belongings!!

Pupil Personal Accident Insurance Please find attached an insurance form for PPAI scheme offered by Allianz. Any parents wishing to avail of the insurance for their children should complete the form & return to school before the 30th September. This insurance is completely optional but the 24 hr cover is highly recommended for any pupils participating in sports.

Congratulations to the children of 4th, 5th and 6th class who recently performed at the Teeling Centre for their end of year concert. The performance was very well attended and enjoyed by all. Music Generation tutors brought their expertise to every class in the school and we have applied to have them back with every class next year.
Well done to the classes from 3rd to 6th who completed an orienteering course with Sligo Sports Partnership. It took place over 4 weeks, with the final day in Union Wood.

The Sligo Fire Service recently visited 1st and 2nd class to give a talk on fire safety.
Parachute Jump Fundraiser
Annette Fagan will complete a tandem parachute jump on June 15th in Tullamore Co. Offaly. The school wish to extend their thanks in advance to Annette for offering to use this occasion as a fundraiser for the school. Sponsorship cards have been sent home with your child. Thank you to all for supporting the school.
Best of luck to the boys who take part in a play-off match to reach the semi-finals of the Cumann na mBunscoil. The match takes place on the 6th of June at Kent Park.
The girls’ football has finished for the year. Well done to all who took part this year, the numbers turning up to training for both boys and girls were very good. Thank you to all members of staff who facilitated the training sessions all year, in particular Mr. Higgins and Ms. Mulvaney for their expert coaching.

4th , 5th and 6th class will go to Shannon River Adventure in Roosky, on Friday the 14th of June. Bus departs from school at 8:50am and to return at approximately 5pm.
Junior and Senior Infants are going to Let’s Go School Tours at Sligo I.T. on Tuesday the 18th of June. Bus departs at 8:50am and to return at approximately 3:40pm.

Xcessible Youth Sports Programme
The children of Crann Darach have been taking part in the Xcessible Youth Sports Programme with Sligo Sports Partnership. Some of the children will attend a Sports Day at the Knocknarea Arena, Sligo I.T. on Thursday the 13th of June. Details will be sent to the relevant parents next week.

Parents Association News
The Parents Association will hold a Family Easter Bingo next Sunday 7th April at 3pm in the Parish Hall, Collooney. All welcome to what promises to be a fun filled afternoon. They will also visit both schools on Monday 8th to do an Easter Egg Hunt with the pupils.

Digital Free Day
Next Friday 12th we are having a Screen Free Day to remind each other of the amount of screen time we engage in on a daily basis. Teachers, pupils & parents are encouraged to reduce their screen time on the day. I’m sure we’ll all find this a challenge!!
Our 4th class will complete their final cycling session with Ciaran of Crank & Cog. The participating pupils have enjoyed the 6 lessons & have learned a great deal about cycling safely on the road.
Our Crann Darach class commence P.E lessons tomorrow & each Wednesday with a coach from Sligo Sports Partnership under the Sports Inclusion Programme.
Pupils from 3rd – 6th class will participate in a 4 week orienteering course run by Sligo Sports Partnership starting on Wednesday 8th May. More details to follow!
Gaelic blitz for 3rd & 4th class takes place on Thursday May 16th in Ballymote. These blitzes are a finale to the gaelic training that has taken place in school most of the year ran by external coaches from the GAA.
To ensure our school retains this valuable coaching we will hold a “Jersey Day” next Friday 12th April at a cost of €2 per child. In addition to these external coaches we must mention the fantastic after school training being provided free of charge by a number of our teachers. The uptake on gaelic recently has been surprising!!
We will be implementing some changes to the book invoicing system for this September. We will be requesting that all books are paid for by mid June. Invoices will issue next week. As you can imagine, the ordering of books for all pupils is a huge expense outlay for the school & we must ensure that payment is received upfront going forward. Details of all book lists and associated costs (photocopying etc.) will be sent out as soon as they are complete.
Please note that we can now accept card payments over the phone if this is more convenient for you.

Orders are currently being taken for Christmas Annuals at a cost of €2 each. The order slips will go home today. If you wish to order an annual for your child or children, please complete the slip & return as soon as possible with the correct fee.
Visit to Markree Castle
A guided tour of Markree Castle has been organised for 5th & 6th class on Monday 26th November and for 3rd & 4th class on Tuesday 27th November. The staff at Markree are kindly facilitating us free of charge & the school shall fund the bus cost. This should be a lovely outing discovering things about the historic building right on our doorstep.
Drug Awareness Talk
Owenmore Gaels GAA Club are hosting a Drug Awareness evening on Thursday 22nd November at 7.30pm in the Clayton Hotel, Sligo. The guest speaker on the night is Dublin football star Philly McMahon, who will share his story on the adversity he and his family have faced due to drug abuse by his brother. The school encourages that all children & their parents in 6th class attend this FREE event. You can collect your tickets at Owenmore Gaels clubhouse this evening (Thurs 15th) at 7pm. This is a ticketed event and places are limited.
County Photos are booked to come back on Wednesday 28th November, to photograph the small number of children that didn’t get them done on the previous visit. The 6th class group photo will also be re-taken, as there were a number of children absent from this class the last day.
Scholastic Book Fair
A big thank you to all the parents who purchased books & stationary from the Book Fair back in October. We have received commission vouchers to the value of €880 to use on school resources. We appreciate your continued support!!
Thank you for the kind donations of board games to occupy our pupils at lunchtime on rainy days! If any parents have games lurking in cupboards that are unused but good condition – we would love to have them!!
The new school website was launched on Friday 28th September. A text message went out last week to advise that we will be uploading photos of school activities in the coming weeks & if you don’t wish for your child’s photo to be on our website please let Stacey know.
The scholastic Book Fair will arrive to both the Junior & Senior schools tomorrow (Tuesday 9th). As is the usual practice, pupils will be allowed to view the books with their teachers during the week & purchases can be made from Friday 12th October. The Book Fair will depart on Tuesday 16th October. The school receives commission of 50% of total sales to invest in our own school library.
Parent/ Teacher Meeting Scheduler
The Aladdin Connect system that we are currently using to communicate with parents have released a new Parent/ Teacher Meeting Scheduler application. We are going to test it out this year for our P/T meetings that will take place on Wednesday 14th & Thursday 15th November. The time slots will be released to parents before the meetings & parents can pick an appointment time that best suits them. The parents that cannot make afternoon meetings still have the option of a morning meeting. Please contact Stacey if you wish to schedule a morning appointment – availability will be limited for these.
NB: School will finish for pupils from 1st – 6th class at 2.30pm on both of these days to allow teachers to prepare for the meetings. Junior & Senior Infants will go home at the usual time of 2pm.

There are a large number of coats in the Senior School that were left behind before the summer holidays. If you are missing any items for your child pop into the school office & have a look. We will recycle all the coats that haven’t been claimed on Monday 15th October.
